Wetting Agents

Wetting agent is a detergent or surfactant that attracts water to the soils surface.
By applying a wetting agent your helping the water soak into the soil where it can be accessed by your lawns roots, the wetting agent will allow water to move freely and quickly through the soil.
If you are considering using a wetting agent you would need to apply one from February onwards so that the wetting agent is active in the ground and is retaining the moisture that’s falling.
You may need a couple of wetting agent applications to get through the summer months.

Different Types of Wetting Agents

• Liquid wetting Agent – need to be mixed with water before applied, if you have brown areas or areas that suffer you can apply extra liquid in these areas.

The liquid wetting agent gets absorbed by the soil as its applied.
You will need a knapsack sprayer to apply the liquid wetting agent.

Recommend 4 – 5 applications

• Granular / Prill wetting agent – are made from a combination of ingredients that include a surfactant, a carrier, and other components that help to stabilise and distribute the product.

The surfactant is the active ingredient that reduces the surface energy of water, while the carrier is a substance that helps to hold the surfactant in place and dispense it evenly throughout the soil.

Granular / prill wetting agents are more effective when it comes to drought because they last longer.
They also take bit longer to take effect because they will sit on the surface and won’t activate until the rain comes, or apply before heavy rain is forecast.

2 Applications of the Granular / prill wetting agents would be suffice.
