Moss Infected Lawns
DON’T LET THE MOSS BOSS YOUR LAWN
At Greenfeet we are seeing many new customers looking for solutions to the moss problem in their lawn.
It is common in Ireland to have some moss with untreated lawns but there will come a point where the grass can no longer compete resulting in a carpet of spongy moss.
When temperatures are low and heavy rainfall combined with shaded areas / compact lawns / bad mowing practice, these can have a huge impact on moss invading your lawn.
Moss can spread at any time of year particularly in damp conditions but in Ireland generally from September through to April.
In the short term, you can put down a shop-bought moss and weed killer, but it really will not do a lot in the long term. It will turn black for a while but it’s just the surface moss, you have to deal with the root of the problem.
If you have more than 30% moss in your lawn we would recommend the additional scarification program.
The moss will have to be killed off with Greenfeet heavy moss max, we allow to penetrate, then we will carry out the scarification to remove the dead moss and apply over-seeding to the full area, before we start a full standard treatment schedule.
Preventing future moss growth
To help prevent moss from regrowing on your lawn, you will need to be aware of the conditions that moss thrives in:
Warm, moist weather – this type of weather is very common in Ireland.
Poorly-drained/Compacted lawn – Heavy soils will need to be aerated every 2-3 years to reduce the effects of compaction. Soil can also be top dressed to improve soil ventilation.
Thick thatchy lawns – thick/heavy thatch can create damp conditions that are ideal for moss.
Cutting the grass too short – this weakens the grass and allows moss to take hold.
Not watering the grass in the dry weather – this can weaken the grass and make it susceptible to moss.
Shaded lawns – this can make it difficult for grass and soil to properly dry out so keep tree/hedges tress cut back to allow natural light onto the lawn.
It can take a few months for the lawn to start looking it’s best, but it’ll be worth it for that long-term solution. As long as the lawn gets sufficient moisture after the additional scarification program is carried out by Greenfeet.
